Avicii has passed away at age 28
One of the biggest EDM superstar DJ/producers, Avicii has died at 28 years of age.
The sad news has shocked the electronic music world and, in fact, such was his popularity and reach, the news has been reported far and wide.
Avicii was one of the first big EDM superstars to do an arena sized world tour and also break into the elusive American market. With over 11 billion streams on Spotify and a long list of massive hits including 10 UK top 10 singles, he reportedly made $250,000 a night on tour.
But in 2014 he had his appendix and gall bladder removed, allegedly as a result of heavy drinking. This led to him announcing his retirement from touring in 2016 which is said to be due to these health issues.
At the the time of announcing this he said “I know I am blessed to be able to travel all around the world and perform, but I have too little left for the life of a real person behind the artist.”
Massive hits and collaborations
Collaborations included Madonna, Coldplay and more recently Aloe Blacc and Rita Orr. Just days ago his self-titled, EP Avĩci (01), was nominated for a Billboard music award for best electronic album. He also had two Grammy nominations to his name.
No cause of death has been announced as yet but his publicist released a statement that reads;
‘It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii,” Diana Baron, his publicist said in a statement. “He was found dead in Muscat, Oman this Friday afternoon local time, April 20. The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given.”
His label, Sony Music releases a statement that reads, “we are mourning the incredibly sad loss of an exceptionally creative talent who we have been honored and proud to represent as one of our songwriters for a number of years. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.”
In 2016 there was talk of an Avicii retirement film being made.
Tim Berglund aka Avicii will forever be remembered for his massive global hits such as ‘Levels’ and ‘Wake Me Up’ and the tributes have been flowing in.
