Virtual DJ 2021 announces real-time stem separation
Virtual DJ 2021 also offers real-time stem separation of tracks!
We say also because just last week Algoriddim announced that their iOS dj app, djay Pro AI can isolate vocals, drums & melodies on the fly.
Atomix Productions has released Virtual DJ 2021 with a new signal separation feature that enables the DJ to split a single track into separate components.
The big difference here is that djay Pro AI is only for iOS mobile devices, i.e. iPhones and iPads whereas Virtual DJ 2021 is a desktop/laptop DJ software application.
This means we’re more likely to see this feature being used by Virtual DJ users with their controllers that iPad users.
Virtual DJ 2021 has 3 isolation modes
You get 3 different ways of isolating stems in Virtual DJ.
EZRemix mode maps drums, instruments and vocals to the EQ controls instead of the regular bass/mid/treble. Anti-clockwise removes an element, clockwise isolates it. This is similar to djay Pro AI’s volume sliders, although not identical.
ModernEQ mode separates the hi-hats while grouping the rest together unless you have a four-channel controller MIDI-mapped. The you can control FIVE Stems – vocals, instruments, bass, kick drum and hi-hats.
Pad Stems mode enables five of the eight performance pads to cut or isolate the vocals, instruments, bass, kick drum and hi-hats. This is great for two-channel controller users as you can control all five stems.
So, depending on your hardware setup and what sort of control you are after, Virtual DJ certainly offers more control over how to manipulate the isolation of these different components.
Both apps use the open source Spleeter Code from Deezer so if you want to get an idea of how effective the isolation algorithms work, give it a try here.
