Yasiin Bey records new track in Cape Town
Yasiin Bey the hip hop artist known as Mos Def has recorded a new track in Cape Town. The track is titled ‘Dec. 99th – N.A.W.’ and was recorded and mixed by Dplanet, aka Human Waste of the Cape Town-based noise rap crew DOOKOOM.
The new Yasiin Bey track is a production debut for Ferrari Sheppard who is ‘known for his work as a journalist, cultural critic and artist’.
Both Ferrari and Dplanet shared their thoughts on the production of the ‘Dec. 99th – N.A.W.’ track…
“The song was made organically, without much forethought. We are two artists creating work ranging from painting to fashion, graphic design to music. There is a mutual adoration and respect between us, and it comes across in the art we create. This is somewhat a Van Gogh – Gauguin period for us in terms of artistic collaboration.” Said Ferrari Sheppard
Dplanet shared that the track’s raw honesty embodied a subtle power that gave him chills throughout the recording. The content he admitted was deeply personal with regards to what happened in his personal life. He echoed that it was also a blessing to share creative space with Yasiin and Ferrari…
“Yasiin is an artist who is never afraid to speak his mind, or to keep pushing his art. When you meet him, he’s so humble it’s hard to remember that he’s a musical and cultural icon of our time. The fact that he has shunned the corporate music and film industries and is living in Cape Town, working with unknown artists and producers, is testimony to his dedication to his art. It was a blessing to share a creative space with Yasiin and Ferrari, and to be a small part of the production of a great piece of music.”
