Watch this scratch routine by an 11 year old
The scratch routine may be a forgotten art form for many DJs these days but it is certainly still alive and kicking.
For one thing the tech companies still like to use turntablism to market their products, specifically turntables (naturally) but also controllers and DJ software. We saw online that Native Instruments in fact latched onto this young 11 year old’s routine and sponsored a post on Facebook to market it.
In this routine, hosted on DJCity, DJ RENA shows of his scratch routine skills by cutting together Jamiroquai’s “Virtual Insanity” and Run DMC’s classic track “Walk This Way.”
It’s never a popular choice to criticize a kid’s music skills.
We did it with DJ Arch Jnr when he won the SA Got Talent Winner in November last year and picked up flack for ‘picking on a kid,’ when in fact we were picking on the show and the father.
Anyway DJ RENA is a Japanese DMC turntablist and there is no doubt if this kid keeps at it, he’s going to be something extraordinary.
We’re just not so sure this routine is that yet.
For one thing the two tracks he is cutting between don’t actually sound in key.
He scores for trickery but not for musicality in our opinion.
What do you think of DJ RENA’s scratch routine?
