Music Is King issues apology for Durban debacle
The 5-hour delay at Music Is King Durban resulted in fans missing out on acts.
Man, it just is not Black Coffee’s year. As if dealing with a public divorce isn’t hard enough, now the techno titan is facing backlash from fans for the ‘Music Is King’ Durban debacle.
Unfortunately, in this case, the phrase ‘blown away’ doesn’t mean anything positive. After a successful Joburg show, Black Coffee’s concert hit the coast for the Durban leg of ‘Music Is King.’ It was then that heavy wind wreaked havoc on the set-up at Kings Park stadium, resulting in a five-hour delay of the show.
Besides restless revellers, the delay resulted in musicians Muzi and Samthing Soweto being cut from the line-up, which did not bode well for the already-angry crowd.

Last night was a huge disappointment. There was no liquor or ice at the bars. The performances felt rushed. I’m very disappointed. #MIKDBN

The Apology
‘Music Is King’ subsequently issued an apology, citing health and safety concerns for the delays caused.
Our sincerest apologies to all Music Is King fans, patrons, partners and associates in the city of Durban.
Our priority on Sunday 15 December was ensure your safety first. We hope you understand and that you will give us another chance to make it up to you. #MusicIsKing pic.twitter.com/tAoNvPZUhg— Music Is King (@MusicIsKingLive) December 17, 2019
The letter mentions an emergency evacuation, structural damage, a late structural engineer and of course the main culprit, wind.
‘Music Is King’ founder Black Coffee also issued an apology.
“It is really unfortunate that the weather did not permit us to bring the full Music is King experience we had planned to Durban. The safety of patrons was our highest priority, and hence we had to wait for legal clearance before continuing with the show,” he said.
“We sincerely apologise to all our fans and the involved artists who were excited to perform on this stage. My team and I are currently working tirelessly to bring back this experience as previously planned for my hometown,” he added.
At least Cassper Nyovest’s #FILLUPROYALBAFOKENG was a success.
Those who stayed at Music Is King Durban managed to catch performances (though many agree were rushed) by Black Coffee, AKA, Sjava and international act Tom Misch.
