And the Guinness World Record for longest DJ set goes to…
The longest DJ set played consecutively goes to America’s DJ Colossus, aptly named.
The title previously went to Nigerian DJ Obi for his attempt of 229 hours and 58 minutes of straight DJing. He had to stop due to medical advice.
Chauncey Graves, known as DJ Colossus officially smashed the record at 13:00 on Sunday after having started his set on Thursday, 20 April in Louisville, Kentucky USA.
He surpassed DJ Obi’s record by 3 hours and 56 seconds.
Colossus was allowed a 5-minute break after every hour completed, which allowed him to eat and regain his momentum.
For him it was more than obtaining a personal record. He felt that since scratching and turntables were created in America, this prize should belong to an American.
The wheels on the deck go round and round, and round
Irregular sleeping patterns are nothing new to the DJ world but over 10 days without it is quite a stretch.
In an interview with Never Nervous Colossus he speaks about his experience saying how the first few sleepless days were the toughest but then he shut his mind and body down to enter a zone.
After the challenge he tried to have a ‘normal’ Monday but soon realized that naps were an inevitable occurrence all throughout the week that followed.
He of course had a stellar team looking after him, bringing him food, his favourite being a sausage Pizza from a place called Spinelli’s.
Spinelli’s provided free pizza to him and his time-keeping staff which provided him fuel for his task.
For DJ Colossus the toughest part was the boredom of those hours where it was just him and his timekeepers. Of course playing to a crowd adds vital energy so those peak hour afternoons and evenings gave him a great boost.
DJ Colossus says has great things in store for the future.
I guess playing the longest DJ set can invoke feelings of inspiration.
