Florence Masebe against reversal of the 90% quota by the SABC

Florence Masebe has weighed in on the 90% quota on government owned radio and television channels.

The SABC seems to be in a continuous pot of boiling water, receiving criticism no matter what they do or say.

Radio is not the star it once was as people can listen to their own music customised through their smartphones. This has resulted in the loss of advertisement and a general loss of revenue.

In July of 2016 former chief operating officer of public broadcast Hlaudi Motsoeneng announced a decree forcing SABC radio to broadcast 90% local. What a brilliant initiative to boost our local talent and put some food on their table.

After a few other mishaps presented themselves for the SABC in 2016 which you can read about here, as well as further blows this year. they are scrambling to survive and it seems they will scrap the 90% decree in hopes of gaining back their listeners.

Veteran actress and activist Florence Masebe feels strongly against the reversal and is speaking out against the SABC.

She feels that reversing this 90% local decree will push the local music industry “100 steps back.”

In an interview with TsishaLIVE s Florence Masebe said “I understand that the board needs to make certain decisions to ensure the future of the SABC‚ and I will respect their decision‚ but it should not be made at the expense of the local music industry. And especially without proper consultation.”

Florence feels that the SABC should meet with the local music industry and recording companies to discuss strategies in securing the future of the SABC as well as the music industry.

Well without listeners no one will even hear our local talent. The SABC has their work cut out for them in creating harmony on all sides.
