Flopped Thank You SABC Concert gets bailout to pay artists
The controversial and flopped Thank You SABC concert will be getting a bailout from MASA (Musicians Association of South Africa).
MASA has confirmed that they will be paying the rest of the money needed to pay the artists who performed at the failed event last month.
It’s already well known that the SABC spent R2.7 million on the flopped Thank You SABC concert. As with any big event it’s not surprising that this amount didn’t cover all of the costs involved.
The Department of Arts and Culture were asked to get involved with the planning but opted out after they received the proposal.
Musicians paying for musicians to be paid…
The MASA bailout for the flopped Thank You SABC concert does come with a few conditions too.
“We have asked for a list of performers‚ those who were paid deposits and those who did not get it‚” said MASA’s Oupa Lebogo to the Sowetan.
The embarrassment of a concert looked like a disaster to everyone but the SABC from the time the press release was sent out. The prediction of the mess that ensued was accurate.
When images of the empty stadium surfaced online, the concert (or lack thereof) was trending on social media. The memes and jokes that followed provided some significant entertainment. The flopped Thank You SABC concert has succeeded in being nothing but a thorn in the foot of the SABC.
Another revelation that was revealed is that music promoter Morris Roda – earlier investigated by the authorities after a failed Miriam Makeba tribute concert which cost taxpayers millions – was one of the main organisers of the show.
While MASA is providing the money to cover the flopped SABC Thank YOU concert, they are not revealing where the money will be coming from.
