SABC wasted R2.7m on the flopped #ThankYouSABC concert
According to reports, the SABC wasted R2.7 million on the #ThankYouSABC concert . The concert was held at the Orland Stadium and proved to be a source of embarrassment and ridicule for broadcaster. Twitter had a great time ripping them off with memes and funny quips.
Reportedly, the SABC had made it clear several times that they had not paid for the concert at all. The reality is that they did in fact pay as much as R2.7 million for the #ThankYouSABC concert. The badly executed event only managed to bring to light just how out of touch and delusional they are.
Only 2,000 people attended
The Orlando Stadium can host up to forty thousand people but the #ThankYouSABC concert only managed to lure in as much as two thousand people. These numbers are almost too sad to report on.
In the bizarre email they sent out a week before the event they claimed to be all set to break a Guinness World Record. They had hoped to have the most artists and performers at one concert in one night. Artists however were not paid and of course did not show up to perform.
Faith Muthambi, told parliament on Wednesday that the SABC did in fact pay R2 695 750 for the mishap of a concert to the Phumelela Group.
“The Thank You SABC concert was an initiative hosted and coordinated by Phumelela Group at Orlando Stadium to thank the SABC and the board for its endeavours to develop local music/content. Costs pertaining to the event would have been directed and charged to the organisers by all service providers contracted to the event,” said Muthambi in a written reply in parliament to a question from the Democratic Alliance.
To add insult to injury the SABC have reported another annual loss of R411 million.
