Yamaha MODX is a new series of synths to replace the iconic MOXF
The new Yamaha MODX range of synthesizers builds on the legacy of Yamaha’s iconic MOXF range, with some intriguing features.
Yamaha MODX comes in three variations, the MODX6 – a 61-key version, the MODX7 – a 76 key version and the MODX8 – a full 88-key weighted and graded Piano-style version. The new MODX series creates almost unlimited sonic potential in a lightweight and mobile-friendly workstation, you can create your own sounds from scratch using the synthesizer engine or choose from tons of preset synth sounds and samples. Furthermore, the Yamaha MODX features Yamaha’s Seamless Sound Switching technology, which allows you to switch through preset sounds without any noticeable drop-out in the audio, making it great for live improvisation.
The successor the MOXF, the new Yamaha MODX synth features their new “Super Knob” which allows you to assign up to 128 parameters, to create complex arrays of macro controls for your patches. “Motion Sequences” is a new feature found in the Yamaha MODX, essentially, they’re tempo-synced sequencers that can be assigned to virtually any parameter within the vast synth engine, using the highly-programmable mod matrix.
What are the most distinguishable differences between the MOXF and the new MODX?
Firstly, the sound engine has been inspired by Yamaha’s new flagship synthesizer, the Montage, allowing for much more in-depth sound design capabilities. Yamaha have expanded the polyphony up to 128 voices of AWM2 and 64 voices of FMX (The two unique engines within the new Yamaha MODX)
The MODX features a touch-screen, making creating complex patches and arrangement much easier than on the MOXF which required a certain amount of menu-diving to get good results. The new synth is super lightweight, the MODX6 weight in at under 7Kg, making it a great companion for musicians on-the-go.
The retail pricing is as follows:
