TheoryBoard is the ‘ultimate hack for production and composition’
The TheoryBoard is a new MIDI controller that plays chords and melodies on light-up buttons.
Instruments that guide you in chord structures and melodies are no longer a new thing; Native Instruments’ popular Kontrol S controllers and Akai’s Advance Keyboard range are just two such examples. The there’s Ableton Push 2 and NI’s Maschine which both enable one to trigger chords on their pad instruments.

But TheoryBoard from Irijule claims to be the “ultimate hack for production and composition.”
Here’s why…
The coloured button interface allows one to pick a scale and then at the press of the buttons, play the chords that fit in that scale as well melodies on top.
The TheoryBoard MIDI controller has over 860 scales and a massive range of chords – but it’s not just about easily creating music without the knowledge; the colour coding helps one to learn how chords and melodies fit together. The diatonic layout, says Irijule makes it a ‘synesthetic musical instrument’ as you can associate colours with harmonies.
The TheoryBoard contains more than 860 scales and a wide range of chords, and the promise is that the colour coding will enable you to understand the relationship between melody and harmony. Musical styles range from pop, blues, reggae, jazz, hip hop, electronic… the list goes on.
