Technics assembles first turntable orchestra in honour of Japan’s national Record Day
Technics assembles first turntable orchestra!
Philharmonic is an adjective meaning “devoted to music” or “music loving.”
Orchestra is a noun meaning “a group of instruments”.
Turntables are well, turntables and if you combine all of these you get The Philharmonic Turntable Orchestra or, a group of music loving turntablists.
For the first time ever, Technics has assembled such an orchestra is honour of Japan’s national Record Day.
Record Day is a celebration of the release of the first LP’s in 1968, with Technics soon following with the release of its SL-1200 turntable in 1972.
The Orchestra consists of 30 turntablists, including revered DMC World Champs such as Qbert, Mr.Switch, Swamp, Kentaro, Izoh and Rena, as well as team champions Yasa and Hi-C.
Keeping it classical
Together the Orchestra reconstructs classical music by playing vinyl records along with a variety of DJ techniques.
Keeping it classical, each member uses a Technics SL-1200 turntable with a classical music vinyl. The idea is for DJ’s to mash-up and rebuild classical sound sources using techniques like scratching, beat juggling, and drumming in order to create an original classical composition.
Among the 8 classical records they used to rebuild their new composition are Vivaldi’s ‘Spring’ from ‘The Four Seasons Violin Concerto in E major’, Rossini’s ‘Girls of the Aged’ from ‘The 6th Album’ and the first 12” ever released, Nathan Milstein and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra’s version of ‘Mendelssohn Concerto in E minor’.
