Spleeter is a new free stem creation tool for remixers
Spleeter is a new AI tool designed to derive several musical stems from a single audio mixdown file.
Streaming service, Deezer, has just announced their release of a new open-source tool for splitting a stereo mixdown into several stem tracks.
The tool is free for anyone to download and use, however you do need a bit of background in command-line input. The system utilizes machine learning techniques to analyse and split the source material, with several different modes to choose from – allowing you to split material into up to five stem files.
This isn’t the first tool designed for this specific task, iZotope RX7’s Music Rebalance offers similar features, however, it comes at a price.
The fact that you need to know a bit about command-line to actually get it up and running is probably the reason that it hasn’t already become an overnight success. That being said I’m sure they’re working on a more user-friendly GUI for the application.
“This already far surpasses any available free tool that I know of, and rival commercial plugins and services,” said Andy Baio, renowned mash-up producer. For those remix producers and mash-up enthusiasts, this is a must-have.
Under the hood…
The system is written in Python, using Tensorflow – which is the basis for the system’s machine learning capabilities. The fact that this is open-source hopefully means we will see it being introduced into some more user-friendly applications, maybe even directly into our DAWs!
The different split modes to choose from are as follows:
- Vocals / Accompaniment (2 Stems)
- Vocals / Drums / Bass / Other (4 Stems)
- Vocals / Drums / Bass / Piano / Other (5 Stems)
