Soundtrap is a cloud based music making platform
Soundtrap is a cloud based music making platform and this Swedish based company has managed to raise $6 million in funding for the project.
This fully featured DAW has both its own set of software instruments and you can plug your own instruments in. Or you can simply use it to record your vocals by plugging in a microphone.
Soundtrap is compatible with Windows, MAC, iOS (iPads & iPhones), Android device (tablets & phones) as well as Linux and Chromebooks.
On Windows, Mac and Chromebooks the GUI interface is really impressive. But having the iOS/Android options also means you can call up a project on your portable devices anywhere, anytime and continue working on them.
Another obvious advantage of cloud producing is that you can collaborate quite easily with any other producer anywhere in the world, anytime.
Great Educational tool
Soundtrap is also a great educational tool and is fully geared for this purpose.
All educational accounts come with a walled garden and COPPA compliance to keep young students safe. This allows students to work together in their own, protected environment.
Students and teachers can also collaborate via video calls from remote locations. Teachers can create group assignments and coach and help their students from where ever they are.
Soundtrap is also an official Google for Education Partner so wherever Google is penetrating with Chromebooks, Soundtrap will no doubt be used too.
It certainly seems like we’ll be hearing more about Soundtrap in the not too distant future. Cloud-based music making may have seemed a little farfetched or gimmicky a few years ago but not anymore.
Even in South Africa fibre optic cables are being laid in all major urban areas so access to fast cloud-based applications is certainly the future we are all facing.
Now we just need to see how long it will take for third party software creators who develop all the plugins to start developing versions for this, because that will make a DAW like Soundtrap very, very appealing indeed.

The promotional video for Soundtrap, although oversimplifying the process of recording does give one a good idea of the potential something like this has.
