Presonus Eris MTM Series – New Product range
The Presonus Eris MTM Series is a new range of active nearfield monitors recently announced by the global tech company.
There are two loudspeakers in the Presonus Eris MTM range, namely the Eris E44 and the Eris E66. As you can see by the images, the MTM series differs from your conventional nearfield monitor as they sport dual loudspeakers. The E44 is fitted with 4.5 inch cones and the E66 with 6.5 inch cones. These are custom-woven Kevlar® LF/midrange drivers which they say will produce dynamic, size-defying bass output.
There is definitely a strong case for dual woofers when it comes to overall bass dispersion so these are certainly an interesting new addition to their range.
The tweeter is a 1.25-inch, silk-dome HF driver which Presonus says delivers a smooth high frequency response, minus the fatigue.
The standard professional input connections on the rear include balanced XLR, balanced ¼-inch TRS, and unbalanced RCA
The Presonus Eris MTM Series offers several very useful controls to better define the sound dispersion based on the room you’re in.
There are continuously variable HF and MF controls (-6 to +6 dB), a low-cut filter (flat, 80 Hz, 100 Hz) and a very handy Acoustic Space setting which can be set to Flat, -2 dB or -4 dB to compensate for the room and how/where you’ve placed your monitors.
The Presonus Eris MTM Series pushes out a healthy 90 watts (E44) and 140 watts (E66) respectively via its built-in Class A/B bi-amplification and has a host of protection features such as RF interference, output-current limiting, over-temperature and subsonic filter protection. The monitors also won’t pop on start up thanks to the amplifier’s ‘soft start’ feature.
What is MTM?
MTM stands for the midwoofer-tweeter-midwoofer design on the Presonus Eris MTM monitors. They reckon that the dual Kevlar drivers deliver a smooth on- and off-axis response with more dynamic output than conventional two-way studio monitor configurations.
Presonus also claim that the MTM design will minimize phase displacement which means an improved spatial resolution and a much wider sweet spot.
In a nutshell, the way the two midrange drivers are positioned, the combined signal of both drivers propagates forward like a single waveform. This means that even though the E44 for example only has 4.5 inch drivers, the sum of the two makes it behave like one single driver.
The Presonus Eris MTM monitors can be placed vertically or horizontally with equally satisfactory results.
