New Sony cassette tape that can hold 64 750 000 songs
A new Sony cassette tape has been revealed and it is claimed to hold a staggering 64 750 000 songs, that’s enough music to last you 134 896 days.
The technology behind the new Sony cassette tape can hold 148 Gigabytes per square inch, making it a total of 185 terabytes of data on the cassette. By comparison, six years ago a standard cassette tape could only store about 29.5 GB per square inch.
To give you an idea of its capacity, it holds up to seventy four times more than a standard cassette tape.
Ten years ago if you were envisioning the future you probably may not have imagined that a company like Sony would revive cassette technology to this degree. The new Sony cassette tape was unveiled at the recent Magnetics Conference in Dresden.
It’s fascinating to consider just how Sony has managed to revive this half century old technology into something new and groundbreaking. With it they have managed to combine the fashionable throwback current of our era with what is considered to be high end technology.
According to ITWorld…
“The tape uses a vacuum-forming technique called sputter deposition to create a layer of magnetic crystals by shooting argon ions at a polymer film substrate. The crystals, measuring just 7.7 nanometers on average, pack together more densely than any other previous method. By tweaking the sputter conditions and developing a soft magnetic underlayer on the film, the manufacturer was able to create a layer of fine magnetic particles with an average size of 7.7 nanometers.”
If you were around during the reign of the cassette tape then you would know that cassette tapes dominated the music sales market during the first half of the nineties. It slowly got replaced by CDs and by the time the year 2001 rolled around, cassette tapes only made up 5% of all music sales. And at that point music distributors were putting their artists’ music out on both CD and cassette.
The new Sony cassette tape is intended for commercial sale but the company hasn’t yet revealed a release date.
