The New SL-1200GAE from Technics sold out in 30 minutes
The new SL-1200GAE turntable from Technics went on sale in Japan yesterday and sold out in 30 minutes according to a news report on Resident Advisor.
But before you gasp in astonishment it must be said that there were only 300 units available.
Nonetheless at a retail price of 356,400 yen – that’s roughly R 47,500 each – it’s still pretty astonishing that the new SL-1200GAE turntable is still deemed so desirable despite so many other really good brands being on the market for DJs.
Between the Numark TT250USB, the Reloop RP-8000 and the Pioneer PLX-1000 you could get a set of any of these and still have some spare change!
The new SL-1200GAE turntable was announced as part of Panasonic’s 50th anniversary year and it is a limited edition so it’s more likely that they were quickly picked up by collectors or audiophiles and not DJs.
It does sport a redesigned motor and tonearm along with some other new features but at the same time remains true to the original design.
They were sold out by 10:30 AM.
“I didn’t think the price was too high as we have confidence in our brand, but I didn’t expect them to sell out so quickly,” a representative of Panasonic told the Sankei Shimbun.
There are plans to produce another 900 SL-1200GAE turntables and these will be for the international market although it is unclear exactly when this will happen. With such a short run don’t expect to see one on South African soil any time soon.
