Native Instruments Crush Pack – the filthy new plugin bundle
The Native Instruments Crush Pack is a variety of plugins designed to add grit to your sound sources.
The pack is comprised of three unique effects, each bringing their own style of distortion to the table. Native Instruments Crush Pack crams in a total of 234 presets to get you going straight-out-the-box.
“Bite” is first in the line-up, it’s a precision bit-crushing tools designed to recreate the sonic anomalies known for defining the sound of early hip-hop and dance music. Bite offers authentic 80s sample-rate reduction, with a wide variety of parameters to dial in the exact tone you’re looking for.
“Dirt” is the next up in the Native Instruments Crush Pack, it’s a flexible distortion plugin allowing you to recreate everything from authentic stomp-box style distortion tones to explosive drum sounds. Dirt is able to add subtle presence to source sound, or even decimate them into oblivion, it’s incredibly versatile and offers various routing configurations to craft your own unique tone. Dirt is equipped with a wavefolding style distortion, able to create completely new sounds from even a sine wave.
So is it just distortion plugins?
“Freak” is a little different, it’s more of a modulation plugin that’s capable of mangling your sound to the point of distortion. Freak combines amplitude and ring modulation with frequency shifting, alongside a retro lo-fi radio emulator. I can see this effect becoming a staple in the foley and sound design for film circles, as it’s able to morph voices from almost demonic tones to digital robotic sounds. Freak really starts getting interesting when you start applying external sounds as modulation sources within the plugin, you’re able to create side-chain type effects to weird and wonderful morphing sounds.
The Native Instruments Crush Pack is fully compatible with the NKS control standard, making it super easy to dive in, if you’re already familiar with Native Instruments’ plugins. It’s available for PC and Mac and comes in VST, AU and AAX formats.
