MAPS is a new tool to tackle music piracy
MAPS is a new tool developed by PRS for Music to tackle music piracy.
Although only available to selected publishers for now, MAPS will work in association with The Publishers Association as a ‘notice and takedown system.’
“MAPS will deliver greater control and transparency to our members, allowing them to participate in our content protection work. The system will also allow for a far greater number of infringements to be detected, reported and removed online.
“Whilst we call for the responsibilities of internet intermediaries to be clarified by law-makers, MAPS will utilise cutting-edge technology to enhance, automate and streamline PRS for Music’s rights protection work,” says Simon Bourne, PRS for Music’s Head of Litigation, Enforcement and Anti-Piracy.
In a nutshell MAPS is designed to boost the detection of infringements which should enable members to get a much broader picture of what’s happening out there in the big bad world of online music piracy and copyright infringement.
MAPS users can create automatic takedown notices for material online that is not licensed or deemed to be an infringement plus be able to remove Google links directing traffic to those sites, although this feature seems only available to a few. For the rest of the plebs PRS for Music Anti-Piracy Unit will assist if notified.
Is MAPS a tool that independent labels could use too we wonder, or is it only for big labels?
