Make music with the Rubik’s Cube Sequencer
The Rubik’s Cube Sequencer will turn music production into a game.
The Sequencer consists of a game board that has 16 squares for 16 cubes, along with a colour recognizing algorithm, allowing you to Rubik’s Cube your way to a track.
Unless you are one of those Rubik’s masters, this probably isn’t the best toy for a live set. The Rubik’s Cube sequencer was created by Sweden’s Hakan Lidbo, by Olov Jernberg and Romeo Brahasteanu.
The only modifications they made to the Cubes were to black out certain sections, leaving only 6 coloured squares each representing 6 different sounds in the software.
The song being created on the board is updated in real-time as they are tinkered with and moved and users are encouraged to fiddle with the Cubes as they see fit to create new and interesting musical combinations.
The sound layout
Each colour represents 1 musical instrument, giving you 6 completely different instruments. Each position horizontally represents a beat in a 4×4 loop.
Each position vertically represents a key with low being closest to the player, rising up to high as you move further away.
Each user is able to put their desired sounds into the sequencer, but in the demo video it was as follows:
White is drums, green is bass, orange is percussion, red is synth 1, yellow is synth 2, blue is synth 3.
As if making music isn’t enough of a puzzle!
But on that note, what a fun and challenging way to produce music- if you can nail combinations to actually make a track, a live show using this could be ultra-cool.
