Levels plugin will help you get your mix levels right
Levels is a (fairly) new plugin that caused a minor stir last month among producers when it was first announced. The reason for the excitement is that this plugin is all about exactly that – getting your levels right on your mix.
In a nutshell Levels puts seven critical metering and mixing tools into one easy to use, easy to understand and most importantly, reportedly easy to get results with, plugin. The GUI is really easy to follow and potential errors highlighted for you.
A home producers wet dream
The majority of home producers deal with all kinds of barriers to the perfect mix; acoustic treatment and budget studio monitors are the two main culprits but other mitigating circumstances can also affect one being able to hear your mix as clearly as you’d like.
Levels takes some of the guesswork away from the sound dispersion you’re getting in your imperfect room and gives you a visual representation of what’s right or wrong with your mixdown. Once you know there are problems you’re more likely to be able to hear them too.
Aside from this visual feedback, features like True peak metering also helps to make sure that your masters won’t clip through the monitors.
Another cool feature is the Vector scope which offers a visual representation of the stereo width on your mix and you’ll get bright red warnings if there are issues. You can also check out frequencies below 300Hz using the Low Pass button to ensure that these are not affecting your overall mixdown.
The there’s the awesome Dynamic Range section which will tell you if your mix is too compressed and the Bass space section identifies unwanted low frequencies, again something that small home studios seldom can detect.
