That meme about IKEA making DJ equipment is actually not far off
Popular Swedish companies IKEA and Teenage Engineering have announced a partnership that promises to bring the party – anytime, anywhere.
Admittedly the collection, entitled “FREKVENS” (the Swedish word for Frequency) is in early stages of development and they haven’t let out too much information on what we can expect, except for the concept, a few of the key elements and design features
“In FREKVENS, we want to make products that everybody can grasp and handle,” says CEO of Teenage Engineering, Jesper Kouthoofd. “Even those who are not so tech-savvy should swiftly be able to understand and use the products. And that, I guess, has been the biggest challenge, to find the right balance between technology and user friendliness.”
IKEA has been known for creating interesting storage and furniture solutions which have been favoured by DJs and home studio owners around the world, while Teenage Engineering are renowned for innovative and mobile sound creation tools. Together they certainly make a particularly striking team.
What can we expect from the FREKVENS collection?
Jesper reckons the recipe for a good party is as follows – a group of people, something to drink and music, and IKEA together with Teenage Engineering plan to take care of at least two of those things with their FREKVENS collection.
FREKVENS will be made up of 22 products so far, although we have only been given a few hints as to what to expect. They’ll be producing portable speakers, LED party lighting and record players, they’ve even announced a guitar!
IKEA’s DIY concept makes this collection very intriguing, will these new devices ship as build-it-yourself kits? We will have to wait till the official FREKVENS launch in 2019 to truly know if these products will hold up to the hype. “It can’t just look great. It has to sound great as well. Or it won’t be a party,” says Jesper.
