More free music software to get through lockdown
Even more companies are stepping up to the plate and offering free music software during the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Something as simple as a new filter plugin can spark that little bit of creativity that you need to turn into your next track, whether you’re looking for a new DAW or wavetable synth – here is a list of even more free music software packages to keep you motivated through the quarantine.
Arturia Pigments 2
What is it:
Pigments is Arturia’s answer to the all-too-prevalent wavetable craze. It’s a fantastic take on the idea, offering several ideas inspired by features found often in modular synthesis, alongside a host of intuitive features and a rack of good sounding effects.
Best feature(s):
- Incredibly intuitive modulation system
- Great Arp/sequencer with randomization
- Oscillator pitch quantize for turning any modulation into a melody
- Built-in sampler with granular capabilities
- Great sounding built-in effects
The catch:
This is essentially an extended trial version, however, they’re offering you plenty of time to create sounds or entire tracks, and then decide whether to invest – or just use it as a source for new inspiration.

Audiomodern Filterstep
What is it:
Filterstep is a nifty new plugin from the creators of “Riffer”, it works in a similar way although instead of generating melodies, it generates stepped filter patterns. There are various randomization parameters alongside more controlled fine-tuning adjustments. The plugin features three filter types with a range and resonance control as well as a “smooth” parameter which smooths the incoming stepped modulation.
Best feature(s):
- Randomization generates sequences automatically which can be latched or constantly generated
- Forward, backward and ping-pong sequencer playback directions
- Works as a standalone application
The catch:
Totally free plugin, no strings attached!
