Engine Software – Denon DJs Music Manager unveiled
The Engine Software was announced at the same time as the brand new Denon DJ MCX800 standalone DJ controller in January this year.
This is Denon DJs music management software much like the familiar Rekordbox for Pioneer DJ users. So far it is compatible with the new MCX8000 controller as well as Denon’s SC2900 and SC3900 media players.
Music management software is essential to managing one’s music library, especially if you are planning to use USB flash drives to host your music.
The reason for this is quite simple; when you arrive at a gig and plug in your flash drive you want to be able to find your music in a familiar and prepared fashion, something that you can do beforehand with the software.
- Important things one should be able to do when preparing tracks for a set are;
- Create a playlist of tracks you think you will play
- Set the stating cue point on the first kick
- Set up additional cue points for –on-the-fly remixing
- Add comments to help one remember more about the track
- Being able to sort by BPM and Key
The Engine Software can do all of these. In fact there are a few extra handy things too. Notably one can import the hot-cues from your existing Serato DJ database, so all the work you’ve done before, if you’re a digital DJ using Serato has not been wasted.
Engine Software 1.5 includes some of these essential features as listed above such as an improved file filtering system, which to be honest is the backbone of library management applications. A track’s metadata will be analysed and one can organise tracks by key signature, an essential feature in today’s world of mixing in key. You can have up to 500 crates, each with 7 sub-crates and one can create 1,000 playlists.
The Engine Software also supports high resolution waveforms in red, green and blue so one can see where the tracks are the busiest and where they are the most minimal. This ties in with the good looking full colour screens on the new MCX8000.
Denon DJ’s Product Manager Ross Goodwin had this to say: “Our latest Engine software is a leap forward in the development of DJ music management. DJs that are free from the restrictions of a laptop still need to play the right music at the right time to engage directly with their audience. Engine 1.5 delivers that capability and establishes an exciting way for DJs to organize and connect with their music library.”
