EarProg app wants to help you identify chord progressions
You can hum along to the melody, but can you identify the chords in the progression?
The ability to identify, and recreate melodies is almost instinctual to many people.
If a tune is catchy you’ll generally be able to identify and hum along or whistle to it. But what about the underlying chord progression?
It takes a highly-trained ear to be able to identify chord progressions on the spot. After years of training, some people still struggle.
Musicians that have grasped this technique open a whole world of possibilities when it comes to songwriting and improv jams.
EarProg is a mobile app that claims to enhance your “musical superpowers”, by training your ear to identify an array of different chord progressions.
The system is broken up into four categories –
“Standard” trains you to identify some of the most commonly used chord progressions in pop-music history, with examples being in C Major.
“Four Chords” expands the selection with commonly use progressions using four chords.
The “Minor” section expands the selection further, with a host of popular minor progressions based in the key of A Minor, while the “Listen” section allows you to trigger any of the available chords for quick reference.
Practical music training can be fatiguing, but with EarProg there’s no pressure!
There’s no pressure to hit high-scores because the app doesn’t grade your ability.
The creators at Leverkühn Apps understand that it’s not a competition, they rely on your ear and brains natural ability to learn.
Without the burden of grading, this app puts you in a relaxed mindset. It may take a while, but your ears will become comfortable identifying different chord progressions naturally, much like years of practical experience.
EarProg is available for iPhone and iPad from the Apple App Store for only USD$1 or R14.99 for South Africans.
