Beatport Producer Contest with Circus Recordings
The Beatport Producer Contest just launched by everybody’s favourite (or not so favourite) online store claims that it will help kick start your career.
Called ‘Beats in School’ they offer the following to the winner:
- ‘One year’s support from the biggest and best in the industry.’
- ‘Artist Management and development by one of Beatport’s top labels.’
- ‘Direct Access to the world’s leading music gear.’
- ‘And much, much more!’
The ‘and much, much more’ is really cool. Usually when they say that it means nothing, lolz!
They’ve called the Beatport Producer Contest ‘Beats in School’ because it is intended to offer the winner a genuine and meaningful opportunity to work with ‘one of the best record labels in the business.’ The label is Circus Recordings.
The winner will also get to work with their partners Point Blank Music School and Future Music Magazine.

The Brief
Not only do you have to produce a track, you’ll need to deliver a 60-minute mix too, so producers who don’t have any interest in DJing will have to think again.
FYI: Unless you’re one ridiculously talented producer we don’t suggest you deliver an hour long mix of just your own tunes either!!!
The Beatport Producer Contest has also partnered with Mixcloud so you’ll need to load both of these to the platform and then promote the hell out of them to get as much traction as possible.
Sound exciting so far? Well yes, until the last bit!!!
This sounds too much like a popularity contest once again.
They say that the Top 20 entries (based we assume purely on the amount of plays you get) will then move onto the next round. Thereafter you’ll need to make a video to introduce yourself to Circus and the main man, owner of the label, Yousef will then decide who he likes.
Flawed but so what…
The selection process for the Beatport Producer Contest is severely flawed, but so is the whole music industry.
So if you’re ambitious enough and really want to get ahead, well then get used to the fact that demos and promos will often not even get listened to by the labels you may send them to. There are just so many DJs/producers out there trying to get heard that it really is a battle of ‘who wants it most’ vs. ability vs. a degree of luck.
That’s the plus-side to this selection process, by the way.
The downside is that sadly Beatport have reduced their ‘Producer contest’ to not much more than a pissing contest where one’s social media skills and ability to buck the system could easily get you into the Top 20, pretty much like a DJ Mag Top 100 poll.
So enter at your own discretion…
But make sure you’ve worked on those marketing skills, not just your productions and mixes, ‘cos that alone will most likely not be enough.
