Aston Microphones – A new all British designed brand
Aston Microphones is a brand new range of microphones and accessories and the most compelling thing about them is that it’s a 100% British brand. Yes that means it was designed and is manufactured in good old England.
With the plethora of Chinese manufactured brands this is indeed a brave move in a global climate that seems to be looking for cheaper most of the time.
So far Aston Microphones consists of two custom crafted condenser mics namely the Origin and the Spirit.
Aston Origin
The Aston Origin is a high-performance cardioid condenser microphone and it has a one inch (1″) gold evaporated capsule. Whilst it excels on acoustic guitar (watch the video below) it is said to be a very versatile microphone. Each capsule is hand selected and it boasts transformer-less circuitry with high quality components such as WIMA capacitors found primarily in boutique microphones.

The Astron Spirit uses a 1” gold evaporated capsule and is a high-performance, switchable pattern, microphone. A body-mounted switch allows one to select Omni, Cardioid or Figure-of-Eight polar patterns. Whilst excelling on acoustic guitar and vocals, it also a highly versatile mic and like the Origin has only high quality components such as WIMA capacitors.
The Aston Microphones Story
The Aston Microphones team is led by James Young, Philip Smith, Alan Gavin and Jack Munro and the two microphones were developed with intense listening sessions and blind AB testing using a list of top producers and mix-engineers in the business at each step of the R&D process.
It’s not just sales talk either! They’ve listed each of the engineers that were involved in the process and it’s a veritable who’s who of British audio engineering aristocracy boasting an impressive list of artists these guys have collectively worked with.
Aside from the Origin and Spirit, Astron Microphones which have just become available now, December 2015, next year they will reportedly also release Reflexion filters. James Young is ex sE Electronics and he has this to say, ““A big frustration has been the lack of any real development in reflection filter technology in the last decade since the release of the first model by sE back in 2006. We at Aston wanted to make a real step forward from this old technology” says James. The design team at Aston decided, therefore, to go back to the drawing board with their take on a Reflexion Filter type product.”
Astron Microphones are apparently also competitively enough priced that they’ll not only be significantly cheaper than its European and American counterparts, they will also compete with Chinese-made brands too.
