REVIEW: V-Moda Crossfade LP2 Headphones
We spent some time testing out the V-Moda Crossfade LP2 headphones.

Although V-Moda have only been around since 2004, the company has made enormous strides in securing a sizable chunk of the professional headphone market. Their products are synonymous with audiophiles and professional DJs alike.
Artist endorsees for their DJ range include the likes of Paul Oakenfold, Roger Sanchez, EDX, The Chainsmokers, Morgan Page and others. Heck, even Giorgio Moroder is listed as a user of their headphones!
In 2016 V-Moda was acquired by the Roland Music corporation, who had used the V-Moda Crossfade M-100 to test their TR-08 Rhythm Performer which they say proved to be of the highest quality and best headphones to be paired with the Roland equipment.
Now that Roland have taken over, V-Moda is readily available in South Africa at competitive pricing. We were given a set of Crossfade LP2 headphones to test.
Here are our thoughts:
What’s in the box 
When you buy a premium product, presentation, packaging and accessories go a long way to make one feel good about your purchase.
The Crossfade LP2 feels every bit a quality product and thankfully V-Moda do not skimp on accessories.
Included is a hard-shell Exoskeleton protective case.
Inside the case itself you will find the headphones, two included cables, a ¼” audio adapter, carabiner (for hooking the case to your belt) and a set of gunmetal shields that can replace the existing shields on the side of the headphones. There is also a fixing kit for the shields (screws / Allen key), a cleaning cloth and a small instruction manual.
The two cables are: one standard cable and one that includes a one-button remote and microphone for use with a Smartphone.
First Impressions
No buyer’s remorse here. Unpacking the V-Moda Crossfade LP2 should give you that warm and fuzzy feeling instantly. They really are a gorgeous set of headphones.
The first thing that struck me is how sturdy they appear. V-Moda have made a lot of noise about their ‘military-grade construction,’ and it is certainly evident with the metal frame and shields. The cables are Kevlar-braided and the leather ear cups and headband are premium.
There’s an understated flashiness about the Crossfade LP2 headphones. They’re not attention seekers but the angular geometry of the frame and overall aesthetic is certainly unique and implies robust and ‘ready-for-business.’
If you are partial to a flashier look this is where the extra set of shields come in handy. The V-Moda tagline is ‘The end of ubiquity,’ and this is because you can personalise your headset with the blank gunmetal shield kit that is included.
You can laser engrave your logo onto the extra set of metal shields or optionally buy different shield colours!
In a nutshell, my first impressions of the V-Moda Crossfade LP2 is a really robust, tough looking set of headphones that shouts ‘premium product!’
In Use
Right, if you’re not sold on the looks, packaging and accessories then let’s tackle the most important bits; comfort and sound quality.
These are full-sized over-ear headphones with 50mm drivers, but the hexagonal design holding the cups in place create the perfect breathing space for them not to feel over-sized or clunky.
The best way to describe the fit of the V-Moda Crossfade LP2 is snug and comfortable. Isolation is excellent too.
Sound Quality
The ‘LP’ in the name stands for ‘Live Play’ and for this reason the Crossfade LP2 certainly emphasises the bass but It is not overpowering. The bass is reasonably deep but somewhat understated, yet present. A common thing with cheaper, budget DJ headphones is a big bass boost, because let’s face it, ‘bass in ye’r face,’ is the easiest way to disguise a not-so decent frequency response.
The mid-range frequencies seem to be somewhat contained. I’ve found this to be the standard on high-end DJ headphones. It does mean that the overall balance of the sound is not 100% spread across the frequency range.
The high-end sparkles with a really crisp, clear delivery. But not piercing in any way. Just really, clear and easy on the ears.
The overall sound delivery on the V-Moda Crossfade LP2 is very much in line with what I’ve come to expect from a premium set of DJ headphones.
Solid, present bass without overpowering the other frequencies, clear but understated mids and really crystal-clear top end.
The most damaging (audible) frequencies exist in the mid-range so it makes sense to carefully balance these as a definite priority to investing in a high-end set of DJ headphones is that they need to protect one’s ears.
The only downside to this is I’ve never found DJ headphones to be the most versatile for leisure listening as some styles of music – bass heavy house etc. – can be a little overpowering on the bottom end.
The upside is that the sparkly tops and present bottom end are absolutely dynamite in the mix with a loud set of onstage monitors next to you!
Conclusion 
The V-Moda Crossfade LP2 headphones are ideally suited to electronic music.
Everything from the packaging, the accessories to the build and sound quality says premium product.
The options to personalise the side shields and the availability of spares and accessories means your V-Moda headphones represent a long-term investment and not just a quick-fix.
There’s not much to fault about them, other than if the styling, which is quite unique, is to your liking or not.
But price point, sound and build quality all get a massive thumbs up.
