The core concept behind Dmitry Sches Thorn is the unparalleled control of your audio’s spectral content throughout the plugin’s signal-flow.
Thorn’s generator section is made up of three oscillators that use a fairly rare method called spectral synthesis. This method allows you to build your sound’s harmonic content from the ground-up – similar to additive synthesis with its own unique set of characteristics. You can draw and edit your own shapes and furthermore, each oscillator offers various effects from FM, RM and PWM to Hard Sync to shape your oscillators.
Here’s where it starts getting interesting, because of the spectral nature of Dmitry Sches Thorn, unlike regular filters which remove frequencies to create the desired effect – Thorn’s Harmonic Filter has direct control over the generation stage of the plugin. Instead of removing frequencies, it alters which frequencies are being generated, at the source. The result is incredibly rich and clean sounds and the ability to draw your own unique filter shapes.
Dmitry Sches Thorn also features dual multi-mode analog-modelled filters – similar to what you’re used to seeing on subtractive synthesizers. The filters each have a saturation stage and offer various routing capabilities.

One of the features that stood out for me, is that each of the sections inside Dmitry Sches Thorn hosts its own pre-set manager, if you like a reverb sound or arpeggiator setting in one of the factory presets, simply load it onto your own sound! This also poses itself as a truly amazing workflow tool for designing sounds quickly.
Nine high-quality effects are built-in, from distortion to delay and reverb, an intuitive step sequencer/arpeggiator editor and an awesome unique feature called “Glitch Sequencer” which allows you to sequence various glitchy effects from bit rate reduction to retriggers.
Dmitry Sches Thorn goes for USD $119 (Around R1500), that’s money well spent as this is a truly unique plugin, especially if you’re into sound design.
