Arturia FX Collection – here are our top five plugins
Arturia FX Collection is a great bundle of effects plugin, here are our top five and why they’re so unique.
Arturia recently launched a bundle consisting of all of their effects plugins alongside a host of new ones, here are our top five from the new Arturia FX Collection and why…
REV Intensity
What is it:
REV Intensity is Arturia’s brand-new reverb plugin, designed specifically for the launch of the Arturia FX Collection. It’s a totally new design, not based on hardware counterparts, like their other reverbs, and it has some particularly interesting features.
What makes it unique:
One of the most unique aspects of REV Intensity is the advanced internal modulation system. It’s not often you see modulation in reverb plugins, as they’re more traditionally used in a mixing context. This extends the use of this reverb into the sound design territory. You can create movement in static sounds or create wild variations.
Best feature(s):
- Freeze function captures and endlessly loops a tone – great for creating pads
- Function generator and envelope follower with sidechain input
- Feedback control send the output back into the input for wild results
Delay Tape-201
What is it:
Arturia’s Delay Tape-201 is an emulation of probably the most sought-after hardware delay, and most emulated one too. This one hits above a lot of the competition by not only being very accurate, there are some more advanced controls for taking things a step further. There’s an LFO with various shapes (S&H included) and an assignable destination. This is great for wild experimentation or subtle organic variations.
What makes it unique:
The advanced controls allow you to really fine-tune the sound of the delay, you’ve got an input EQ, control for flutter, noise and inertia of the internal tape machine and like I mentioned above – the assignable LFO.
Best feature(s):
- Sounds incredible
- Built-in spring reverb
- 12 selectable modes
Filter Mini
What is it:
At its heart this plugin is simple, but you’d be surprised how handy it is for many different applications. The Filter Mini is a recreation of the classic Minimoog filter, with an added envelope follower, LFO and step sequencer. Each of the modulations has a variety of destinations, allowing for a ton of versatility.
What makes it unique:
The step sequencer is a great addition to the filter, it’s a nice way of adding movement to a static synth sound or creating variations on drum-beats during a break. The smooth function is particularly handy, allowing you to create more custom LFO-style shapes than traditional stepped modulation.
Best feature(s):
- Built-in pre-filter drive
- Dry/wet is great in combination with the modulations to add subtle movement to a sound
- Limit resonance feature allows you to switch between a more accurate or modern resonance response
Comp FET-76
What is it:
This is another emulation of an incredibly popular and highly-replicated hardware unit, the revered 1176. Known to be incredibly versatile and easy-to-use – Arturia has extended the function of the classic design with the advanced controls.
What makes it unique:
The original 1176 was known for its versatility despite having very few parameters, this lead a lot of engineers to create chains of effects – filtering sidechain signals for example, and complex matrix switches for different uses. The advanced panel has a sidechain EQ, allowing you to fine-tune the sound that’s affecting the threshold, allowing you to create sidechain-like effects without the hassle of routing – there’s also an additional sidechain input if needed.
Best feature(s):
- Sidechain EQ and external input
- Time warp to fine-tune the preset attack and release
- Compression range parameter for fine-tuning the dynamic range
Pre Trid-A
What is it:
Arturia’s Pre Trid-A is a recreation of the channel strip from the legendary Trident A-Range console. Only 13 A-Range consoles were ever made – making them still incredibly sought after to this day.
What makes it unique:
There’s not many truly unique new parameters on this plugin, however it creates a really lush saturation sound when the inputs are boosted and outputs reduced – to compensate for the gain of course. Furthermore the EQ stages allow you to quickly boost at particular ranges to alter the saturation.
Best feature(s):
- M/S mode allows for some interesting use of stereo saturation
- Sounds amazing
Go for the whole pack…
The plugins retail for EUR €99 (Around R1700) each, they are currently on special for EUR €49 (Around R850) – however the entire pack which includes 15 plugins retails for EUR €399 (Around R7000) but it’s currently on special for EUR €299 (Around R5200), so if you’re thinking of getting these five plugins, honestly it’s worth it to go for the whole pack – they’re all good in their own ways.
