Women Shaping Tomorrow initiative boost women EDM scene
Women Shaping Tomorrow aims to balance the scale between men and women in the electronic music scene.
Their goal is not to break down men and take over the industry but rather boost women in their capabilities to rock a male dominated industry.
The facts speak for themselves as only 17% of major headliners at festivals are female and a dismal 5% of producers being female.
In such a diverse and all-loving scene as electronic dance music there has been a debate as to how there simply aren’t more women DJ’s/producers to fill the slots.
The only way to get those numbers up is to promote women to produce or become DJs.
Smirnoff Vodka and online music school, Point Blank, are shooting to kill (dance floors of course.)
Equalizing Music
The initiative involves empowering workshops where women can learn the tricks of the trade from the best in the business.
From sound mixing in the studio to music production and DJing, women can learn how to infiltrate a predominantly male scene.
They reiterate how they “don’t want to take over, but just be equal genders.”
They hosted a Masterclass titled “From Dancefloors to Record Stores” which was aimed to inspire creativity in production, promotion and performance skills.
It featured a panel discussion involving industry greats like Kate Simko, Fabric booker Judy Griffith and mastering engineer Mandy Parnell alongside Carly Hordern from Point Blank.
A hardware jam session also ensued from Paul Ressel with TR-8s, TB-3s and a Juno.

We could certainly do with something like this in South Africa. In fact it should be a global initiative.
