Whosampled will show you the connection between artists
Whosampled will help you figure out how your favourite artists are connected. It’s a modern day internet game that draws in connections between artists you might have assumed had nothing in common.
After trying out a few different artist combinations (even of people I’m not a fan of) it becomes obvious that the slightest and arbitrary connection will be called upon.
For instance, the connection between Britney Spears and J Rawls is at 2%. They are connected because they both sampled different James Brown tracks.
Britney sampled ‘Funky Drummer’ by James Brown for her track ‘Touch Of My Hand’. J Rawls sampled ‘King Heroin’ by James Brown for the track ‘Can I Be Real’. It’s a stretch but the connection is there.
Useful or just a time waster?
The Whosampled hidden connection between musicians can serve as an educational tool while simultaneously being a good way to waste some time.
You can try it out for yourself by entering the names of any two artists you can think of. The game is called ‘Six Degrees of Music Separation’ and it will show you if and how they are connected. Their database draws out information on everything from samples, cover versions, remixes, collaborations and other production or writing credits.
Your task is to get the better of Whosampled by coming up with two artists that have absolutely no connection at all. The best score we could come up with was the 2% connection and then decided to get back to real life after fifteen minutes of trying to clock this game.
If you would like to lose yourself within a musical whirl wind then Whosampled could be enjoyable. In order to fuel to the fire, they also added a film and TV dialogue feature to their database.
