Watch Insta DJ: a doccie exploring social media’s impact on dance music
Insta DJ may focus on dance music, but it’s something everyone living in the digital age should see.
A new documentary by Pioneer DJ explores social media’s impact on DJs and the dance music scene as dissected by artists, DJs, managers and experts.
The 43-minute documentary explores all sides of social media, positive and negative, to give a complete overview of its impact.
No one can argue the magnitude of its power in creating a brand (yes, DJs and artists are brands) that leads to bookings and ultimately, success- and it’s right at your fingertips. It allows artists to communicate with their fans/consumers and get instant feedback.
But also, no one can argue the vast negative effects social media can have on people, including obsession, addiction, jealousy, and depression. It also fuels a certain level of unconsciousness whereby the user is not present. It’s funny how social media’s sole purpose is to create a connection, yet it’s resulted in extreme disconnection.
If you’re going to be on the dance floor, be on the dance floor
Artists and experts including Annie Mac, Carl Cox, Danny Howard (BBC Radio One), Mark Lawrence, Natasha Devon MBE (advisor on mental health and body image), and more give invaluable insight on a topic that is affecting EVERYONE in the digital age.
In testing his codependency, BBC DJ Danny Howard goes a week without any form of social media, with revelatory results. Carl Cox talks about how phones and filming is impairing the live show experience.
The purpose of the doccie isn’t to slam social media, but rather to raise awareness of how unbalanced we’ve become with hopes of inspiring balance.
