Video platform VEVO hacked after telling hackers to ‘F*** off’
VEVO hacked after flipping off concerned hackers.
When hackers inform you of your security weakness, give your thanks and fix the flaw.
The last thing you want to do is ‘flip them the bird.’
This is something one VEVO employee has had to come to terms with in a recent hack and massive data leak from OurMine.
How big a leak? Over 3 terabytes worth of internal files from VEVO appeared on Saturday.
The cache includes various documents such as VEVO watcher statistics on their top 90 pop stars like Katy Perry and Calvin Harris, promotional statistics as well as more sinister information such as alarm code procedures.
The hacking group OurMine, who has hacked the like of WikiLeaks, HBO social media accounts and FB Barcelona, has claimed responsibility for the VEVO leaks.
Hacknowledgement
Gizmodo reports that initially the hackers compromised VEVO employee account on workplace application, Okta.
As any good citizen would do, the hackers then contacted VEVO to inform them of the security flaw, but were sadly met with a ‘F*** off’ response from an employee.
Great idea to piss off someone who exposed a security flaw….
Well that employee must be eating his words now after OurMine leaked the information for free.
However since the leak, OurMine has removed some of the URL links to documents upon VEVO’s further request.
VEVO has confirmed the attack in statement to Gizmodo: “We can confirm that Vevo experienced a data breach as a result of a phishing scam via LinkedIn. We have addressed the issue and are investigating the extent of exposure.”
Moral of the story: Don’t be rude to people to have exposed a security flaw in your system.
