Underground Resistance accuse Armin van Buuren of copying them
Underground Resistance are a pretty established techno collective with enough rep in their own right to get quite pissy about this and they have.
They’ve accused trance producer, and something of a legend in his own right, of stealing both their name and logo. In fact Underground Resistance were upset enough to take to Facebook and share their feelings.
Underground Resistance are suggesting that Van Buuren’s new Wednesday residency at Hï Ibiza which is called U R With Armin Van Buuren is actually a rip off of their name/logo etc.
This is what Underground Resistance wrote on Facebook:
“Is there no shame? What happened to electronic creativity? What the fuck is it all about the money?? To ‘those who know’ MOVE TO CONDITION RED!!”
“To those who steal culture. You have been warned. Viva La Jaguar – 040.”
The Rebuttal
Van Buuren was surely not going to take the allegations by Underground Resistance lying down right?
Right!
It seems the name had nothing to do with Underground Resistance and in fact had everything to do with a catchphrase Van Buuren had coined a long time ago.
The UR, Van Buuren says, is actually derived from the old Universal Religion concept he used several years back.
Here’s his full statement. It’ll be interesting to see if Underground Resistance plan on leaving their Facebook post up and insisting he plagiarized them or if they accept his explanation because one this is for sure; Armin ain’t changing it!
“I would like to start off by saying how unfortunate and unpleasant this situation is for everyone involved. My team, the team of Hï/Ushuaïa and myself were not aware of the similarities between our logo and the logo of Underground Resistance. Originally, UR – the name of the new event through which I’ll perform in Ibiza every week – is derived from Universal Religion, an older but nonetheless known Armin van Buuren concept. The logo, which consists of a custom-made font and frame, was designed to conform with the Armin van Buuren brand. After careful deliberation, my team, the team of Hï/Ushuaïa and myself have decided to keep the name UR as it is and to adjust the symbol. I trust that media, fans and Underground Resistance will be able to understand this decision.”
The evidence
We’ve gotta say that the new UR logo Armin uses is pretty similar to Underground Resistance.
This is the UR logo
Here’s the U R With Armin Van Buuren poster
And… this is the original logo for Universal Religion
