Two South Africans selected to attend Red Bull Music Academy 2018 in Berlin
The Red Bull Music Academy 2018 celebrates its 20th anniversary back where it began, in Berlin.
The formidable music academy, hosted by Red Bull, will take 61 music-makers from around the globe, varying in styles, through 5 weeks of lectures, studio sessions and one-of-a-kind music events.
As the Academy receives thousands of applications each year, a jury carefully reads-and listens- through every submission, resulting in a class that reflects diverse styles, methodologies and cultural backgrounds of the applicant pool.
This year artists representing 37 different nationalities, including South Africa, Kenya, South Korea, Mexico and more will come together and get their music on at the Red Bull Academy, which will be held in Berlin from September 8- October 12.
Proudly South African
The 2018 Academy will display an array of different genres and sounds, including evocative electronica from Japan; IDM from Iran’s underground club scene; new-school UK jazz; AND Afro-future dance music from South Africa!
Two South Africans will join the Academy in 2018, namely DJ Jakinda and Cornelius SA.
DJ Jakinda is a self-taught DJ and Producer who makes up one half of the group Stiff Pap. He fuses kwaito, hip-hop and gqom to create afro-future electronica, which shines through on his 2017 hit song, Dlala.
Joining him at the Academy is Cornelius SA who hails from South Africa’s deep house capital, Pretoria. Cornelius’ track Keep Your Mouth Shut is a deep house track spiked with soul, Afro-house and a twinge of techno that was well received, gaining radio airplay and popularity throughout the country.
