Thump, Vice Magazine’s dance music website closes down
Sad news for all of us involved in the world of dance music media is to hear that Thump had been closed
down.
Thump was Vice Magazine’s electronic dance music portal and much like the parent magazine, they would always offer a different angle to our world.
Vice has in fact laid off 2% of its workforce in the USA, Canada and Europe on Friday which amount to around 60 of the 3,000 people they employ. Thump was a casualty of this move which the media company says is due to them wanting to expand more internationally.
Dance music not the only casualty
Vice Sports was also shut down so the sales staff, editorial staff and others have all been affected by the layoffs.
Thump was launched in 2013 as a dedicated electronic dance music platform aimed at using the same sort of editorial and journalistic approach that made Vice so popular.
Ironically the announcement of the layoffs has occurred just one month after the parent company announced $450 million in funding from private equity firm TPG.
Sometimes new investment means new horizons and clearly the veneer of dance music has lost a little bit of its shine.
The content, they say, will be moved over to Vice but there’s unlikely to be any new focused electronic dance music content.
Adios Thump, it has been real!
FYI: The site is still up but from this week we’re not expecting anything new to be published.
