Thibo Tazz – Red Bull Billboard Campaign
This is a first as far as we know. We’re calling it the ‘Thibo Tazz – Red Bull Billboard Campaign’ – as Red Bull Music Studios in Cape Town have done something quite extraordinary and unique.
They have released a 5-track EP by Thibo Tazz – called Layers. Okay nothing too strange about that part. Red Bull have been heavily involved and absorbed in the SA music scene for some time (and of course the global scene) and through the Red Bull Studio in Cape Town they often record bands, host producers, track recordings and vocalists and of course sponsor and host their own stages at some of the biggest festivals around the country. Cynics may claim it’s all just one big marketing campaign and the answer to that is YES! Of course it is. But it’s one in which the smart drink company provides undeniable resources to many, many musicians, DJs and producers which, let’s be fair, is way more meaningful than simply jumping on the current EDM bandwagon and just throwing money at an event.
Don’t get me wrong. We love it when brands throw money at the music biz… heck knows it needs it, but with Red Bull they have so much infrastructure in place and along with the studio in Cape Town plus the people working there who actually care about music and know a thing or two about it too, they do offer real value to the music biz.
So Thibo Tazz attended the Red Bull Music Academy along with Culoe De Song back in 2008 in Barcelona. He has since worked closely with the company and is a regular at all their workshops and studio sessions. In the mean time he has also been plying his trade as a DJ and producer, which has gotten him to this point – the Red Bull backed release of the 5-track EP, Layers.
Okay so what’s the big deal then? Isn’t it just another release? Well yes… and no. Firstly it’s been released for FREE Download. Secondly other producers/remixers can also download the separate stems for any of the tracks and remix them as they wish. Thirdly they’ve used this release to underpin their Download. Collaborate. Re-Imagine. campaign which has been backed by massive billboard posters in Cape Town and Joburg, as you can see by the pics.
The tracks themselves were produced by Tazz over a two year period, partially at the Red Bull Studio in Cape Town and partially in his own studio environment.
What are your thoughts on this new campaign by Red Bull? Are they riding the coat-tails of a promising young producer or do you think this project will raise Thibo Tazz’s profile and take him to the next level in his DJ/Producer career?
