The Red Bull Beat judges have made their penultimate call: 7 of the best crews that will battle it out with The Reptilez.
What started out as a journey to six cities – that saw a medley of genres and a score of 170 crews audition over a period of more than a month – will reach its conclusion 1st June when the final bell will ring a winner at Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown Soweto.
Across the board many note the real challenge was decided who goes and who stays.
“The crews took it to another level this time,” said judge and veteran B-boy Vouks Nojokes. “The crews were also much younger which means dance is alive and well in SA.” Of the many who entered most still sprout from Johannesburg – the number of entrees from the mother city was 1 crew shy of 100.
So, what do the current defending champions, Reptilez, have to say now that they know what they’re facing?
“Other crews are hungry to steal the crown. We’ve got a lot to prove and we want to prove is ourselves! They are not going to have it easy.”
The hopeful challengers are as follows – 8one∙Oh Meninas (Hip Hop); Ace (Hip Hop); Beauty and the Beasts (Breaking); Brooklyn (Hip Hop); Clinch (Hip Hop); I.D.A. (iSbhujwa) and Via Volcano (Pantsula).
To rile up the crowds, Reptilez will be touring around SA this year before doomsday hits June. Joining them are legendary beat makers Ready D and Switch.
