The Generation Of Consequence starring Spoek Mathambo
The Generation Of Consequence starring Spoek Mathambo is a short film that was created and shot in Cape Town.
The Generation Of Consequence was written and directed by Paul Speirs and stars Spoek Mathambo, Mandilakhe Sabongo, and Chi Mhende who is originally from Zimbabwe.
Paul Speirs had specific reasons for wanting to work with Spoek Mathambo on The Generation Of Consequence, including Spoek’s inclination for narrative that is theme driven.
“I’ve followed and appreciated Spoek Mathambo’s varied creative work and particularly his instinct for theme driven narrative. Working with him and his music, we found a beautiful, almost juxtaposed compliment between the slow unravelling story and beating pace of his Fantasma track. A strange pairing of sorts, that leaves the viewer at odds with the physically small, yet metaphorically large world created in four minutes.” Said Speir
When asked to describe what the film is about this is what they had to say…
“The cyclic nature of generational sin, and how the fiery resolve of youth may be the only power strong enough to end a cycle of brutality.”
The tagline reads as “Youthful resolve is a burning flame, dimmed with time, and snuffed with age.”
The short film features the track ‘Damn’ by Spoek’s very own band, Fantasma.
Paul Speirs elaborates on just what he was hoping to achieve with this piece of work by focusing on how innocence gets lost as people get older.
“I wanted to explore the consequences of choice in short film form, to lyrically unfold the loss of innocence with age. Youthful resolve, a child’s capacity to determine who it is they want (or don’t want) to become, is often snuffed out by circumstance and cynicism and inherited by the next generation. What if the power of this naive resolution, with the potential to end a cycle of brutality is to be the decision maker?” wrote Paul.
