Techno to be recognised at the 2018 Grammy Awards
So it finally happened. The Grammy Awards are recognising techno music as a valid style of music worthy of an award.
Naturally we can’t expect to have more than 1 category but we will take or shall we say ‘tech what we can get.’
President Neil Portnow says that this announcement is due to the “increased interest in dance music throughout the US” with Techno being the biggest hit of the moment.
For such an expansive genre it comes as no surprise that NARA had some difficulty in compiling the nominees.
Their process was to “listen through the top-selling Beatport tracks in the genre from the past year” says President Portnow and that they “could not discern any differences between any techno artists or songs.”
They then took to music blogs to do further research and the results were….
It’s Progno not techno!
REZZ is often referred to as the “dark queen of techno.” This was enough for them to give her the first nomination in the category. Techno fans were outraged by this saying that she doesn’t fit the bill. When considering artists such as Adam Beyer and Maceo Plex, techno fans also disagreed, saying these artists are more dark prog also known as progno.
Corey Johnston, a 26 yr old techno fan feels that artists such as Rødhåd or Âme deserve more credit than REZZ. The fans of Chris Liebing, Marco Carola and Ben Klock are also dismayed.
Did the NARA’s even do proper research?
They even pissed off Kanye… not that it takes much but he feels that the snubbing of legends such as Carl Craig and Kevin Sanderson is racist and will protest by not attending the awards.
Although electronic music breeds and thrives in the underground, this could be a positive boost for the industry. Our only suggestion is that they do more research or get in a ‘techspert’- maybe Corey is available.
