Survey: How loud music affects dining
Loud music affects dining negatively, it’s not ‘edgy.’
Whether you’re looking for a night off from cooking or celebrating a special occasion, eating out is meant to be a stress-free experience.
Setting, atmosphere, service and quality of food are factors that determine the rating of an establishment and work in harmony to give you the best possible experience.
Let’s zero in on a vital factor: Atmosphere (it’s all around us). You see, besides setting i.e. the way a place looks, atmosphere determines your first impression of a place. It’s essentially how a place makes you feel, and a large influencer of feeling pertains to music.
Cloud Cover Music conducted a survey to test US patrons feeling towards music while dining and the results are anything but surprising.
A sound bite
Okay, so the survey pool only had 941 participants, which isn’t exactly the entire America- but I think we can all agree with the general consensus.
66.7% of participants cited loud volume for disliking restaurant music, followed by poor sound quality (21%) and disliking the artist (20.8%.)
So, why do restaurants blare music? One theory is that loud music promotes fast eating, which translates to a higher frequency turnover.
However, as the study shows; loud music decreases the amount of money spent by 10.4%. Another noteworthy effect it has is a decreasing in relaxation (45.9%) which if you ask me is enough reason to never go to an establish again.
Why would you want to go out and enjoy a meal when the atmosphere is stressing you out and making you gobble down your meal. No thank you!
Loud music affects dining experiences negatively, so think of that before you crank the sound system.
