Stephan Bodzin returns to South Africa in December
Stephan Bodzin performed at Origin Festival in 2015 in Cape Town. His announcement on that lineup was received with moderate enthusiasm but just two years later Cape Town (and South Africa) has finally caught on. Or have they?
He is NOT cheap to book, not by a long shot.
I know several promoters who have tried to book him and have balked at the cost so it’s no surprise that a brand like Olmeca have been able to do what most independent promoters can’t. Not on their own anyway!
Olmeca brought out Deadmau5 a few years back, also Nick Romero, did a block party with Major Lazer & Diplo and have given support to many big events in SA such as Spring Fiesta with their Olmeca House Sessions and Grietfest 2017 has them as their main sponsor too.
For a brand to do their own ‘branded event’ they need to select an artist that is almost unattainable by independent promoters. They also want one that has tons of street-cred among the trainspotters and DJs so that these ‘influencers’ can rage on about how amazeballs said artist is.
It’s easy for a big brand to simply book a DJ Mag Top 10 type guy, but where’s the story in that? Especially for a brand like Olmeca who are legitimately involved in supporting the South African dance music scene.
Stephan Bodzin fits this profile perfectly.
He really is a thoroughbred techno producer and I am very excited to see him perform. I just wonder how the masses who get caught up in the hype will respond.
This is not gimmicky call-and-response techno/deep house kids.
Stephan Bodzin is one serious cat, making pretty serious and intelligent music. I hope South Africa is ready for him.
