Spotify South Africa coming soon
Spotify South Africa is finally to become a reality.
No more using an international IP address to create a Spotify account if you’re from the southern tip of Africa.
Finally South Africans will be able to get a piece of the mega streaming pie, Spotify.
The company cheekily posted an ad for a ‘Senior Editor/Music Programmer-South Africa,’ casually revealing their plan to come to our country and the African continent.
The Spotify South Africa launch is part of a bigger expansion crossing beyond our borders to tap into potentially lucrative music markets in countries like Nigeria and Kenya.
There is no exact launch date for Spotify South Africa though insiders believe it will be available “in the next few months.”
Spotify follows suit of streaming services such as Deezer, Google Play and Apple Music, who have already made a stamp in this country’s market.
Streaming in SA
Last month, Telkom announced a no-data deal for its FreeMe clients, which sees users streaming music and video for free when using services like Apple Music, Google Play, Simfy Africa, Netflix, YouTube and Showmax.
Spotify is sliding into the market at the perfect time as streaming revenue is on a swift rise.
A report made by the Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) earlier this year revealed:
The total South African streaming revenue increased from $1 877 000 (R24 360 000) in 2015 to $8 150 000 (R105 756 845) in 2016.
These figures show a colossal growth of 334.2% in just one year- a sure sign of success for anyone entering the streaming market in SA.
The Spotify ad says the new recruit is to join the company’s Shows and Editorial team which is responsible for South Africa, in London or Dubai.
The editor would “play a senior editorial role in the daily programming for Spotify South Africa and curate a large number of varied playlists”.
Spotify is a freemium service developed in Stockholm, Sweden, in late 2008.
Its catalogue boasts over 30 million songs, which is roughly the same as its biggest competitor- Apple Music.
In the next few months, Spotify South Africa could be another awesome source for music lovers.
