soWHAT Records celebrates 10 years of Afro and Soulful House, that’s what!
Making it through 10 years of anything is a feat worth celebrating, especially when that ‘anything’ is the cut-throat industry of music.
What’s great about labels celebrating 5 or 10 year anniversaries is that they usually do so by bringing out a compilation or, you know something to do with music.
Well for the beastly-yet boutique label, soWHAT, fans are privy to the release of not one, but two celebratory compilations, you know because why skimp out on good and groovy music?
soWHAT was established in 2007 by DJ/Producer UPZ and is based in Johannesburg.
Over the years, the label has focussed on releasing singles, EP’s and compilations covering the afro, soulful & melodic spectrum of house music.
The cream of the house music crop
When talking about longevity in a label, we need look no further than the music; soWHAT has featured productions and remixes from the best in SA House, amongst others like Black Motion, Black Coffee, Cuebur, Qness, Harrison Crump, Dahl Hates Disco, DJ Ganyani, BlackwHole, Mariechan, Sio, Lady X, Maleh plus international artists Yotam Avni, Rancido, Abicah Soul, Kafele, Jocelyn Mathieu, Lifford, Stephanie Cooke and more, getting to the 10 year mark is a breeze.
The label’s current single “A Dream Away” by songstress Sió & producer UPZ is currently on South African airwaves and has just entered the top 100 SA Shazams with the Cuebur remix getting particular attention amongst house fans. The follow up single is Dahl Hates Disco “I’ll Never Be” out later this month.
They will release two compilations: one being Afro House, and the other being Soulful House.
