As the thousands of fans filed into the MTN Expo centre in Nasrec, they were greeted by van Buuren through a radio booth from where he live-broadcasted the first show of his global tour on his popular weekly A State of Trance radio show. Guests got to experience an intimate behind-the-scenes set-up and interact with van Buuren throughout the evening.
van Buuren, who had a supporting DJ line-up of four acclaimed acts, surprised fans by opening the show at 20h00, feeding into a state of the art AV set-up from his radio booth and playing for the full first hour. The superb opening was followed by the impressive line-up of DJ elite thrilling SA crowds: Chicago based Blake Jarrel took over from van Buuren followed by SAMA nominee and SA’s very own DJ and producer Protoculture flying the local flag on the decks. Protoculture was followed by prolific international DJ, Lange, who handed the decks back to van Buuren for his main set.
By this stage, the energy in the crowd was electric and the ardent fans were chanting van Buuren’s name luring him on stage. As he entered, with state of the art lighting and fire and smoke emanating from the stage, the fans erupted into song and dance. A sea of hands was raised in the air during the set, a gesture the crowd mimicked from the zealous Armin.
“Armin has an innate ability to read the dance floor and worked his crowd into euphoria for a full two hours. The energy was infectious and I am certain that every person that was at the venue was left spellbound by the incredible talent that was presented. We have taken the Smirnoff experience to the next level and are humbled by the knowledge that we have delivered yet another indelible experience for the fans. ” says Matt Mey of Smirnoff South Africa.
Not only did van Buuren and the exceptional line-up leave his fans ecstatic, the event hosts were also blown away by van Buuren’s humility. “I was amazed as I watched Armin walk the venue before doors opened introducing himself to each of the bar and event staff wishing them well for the night ahead. That’s the talent that we wish to align our brand with and I can honestly say that it was indeed a pleasure to work with him,” concludes Mey.
Netherlands born creative mind, Leon Bolier took over followed by his fellow countryman Jorn van Deynhoven. Their musical ingenuity was amplified by the lighting and the pyrotechnics sending crowds into a dancing frenzy.
With fans listening in via audio stream from Denmark, Argentina and Sweden amongst other countries, the show is estimated to have reached over 10-million listeners in 26 countries. Judging from the posters dedicated to van Buuren and branded T-shirts by fans, the South African Trance scene is robust and catching up fast with the global scene.
A State of Trance 500 now moves on from South Arica to tour the remaining four stops; USA, South America, Europe and Australia. The total tour involves travelling to five continents, five cities, with five of the hottest nights on the 2011 calendar boasting a month long tour from 19 March – 18 April 2011.
