NYC underprivileged kids discovering creative outlets in music
NYC underprivileged kids are being helped to find creative outlets in music thanks to the efforts of one Mr. Max Alper who founded Sonic Arts for All, known as SAFA!
Alper comes from a privileged Boston background and until he went to Brooklyn College he thought that all young artists had Apple computers and MIDI controllers.
He reflected on his fortunate position to Thump…
“Only later on would I realize that all that was privilege, that I was a very lucky kid to have such emotional and financial support to study the music I liked and… pursue a college degree in the field.”
He graduated two years ago and is now a Brooklyn College grad student, musician, and promoter. He has also figured out a way to give back. Max Alper founded the Sonic Arts For All (SAFA!) organization that centres on hands-on music creativity for NYC underprivileged kids from kindergarten to grade twelve. This also includes underserved communities and special needs children.
The mission for SAFA!
The mission is carried out via workshops that SAFA! hosts throughout the city for NYC Underprivileged kids. They teach concepts such as music theory, arrangement, production, and ear training through the use of digital instruments such as iPads and laptops. What’s great about this musical program is that most children are already familiar with these devices, so it’s not like having to learn how to play an instrument from scratch.
Their aim is that by the end, the kids would have built a set of long-serving technical and creative skills, and they’ll have a portfolio to show for it.
“When a young student realizes they can utilize what they normally used as a gaming device to create original music that’s enjoyable to make and listen to, that’s when the intimidation is replaced by curiosity to explore this new field of musical learning. The lightbulb goes off, and the student wants to dive deeper, and we’re here to encourage them to experiment and learn through trial and error.” Said Alper about the SAFA! initiative.
Something similar to SAFA!, but not entirely the same, is on the cards in South Africa with the Bridges for Music School that is being built in Langa, South Africa.
