Sacha Baron Cohen rips EDM culture in ‘Who is America’ episode
Sacha Baron Cohen is DJ Solitary.
Let’s face it, it was only a matter of time before Borat took a stab at EDM culture; and that time is now and it even includes real stab sounds.
In the latest episode of his politically charged series on Showtime, Who Is America, Cohen takes on the role of ex-convict turned aspiring EDM producer Ricky Sherman; stage name DJ Solitary.
Sherman aspires to turn his prison experiences into art, creating a track using sounds from prison life like toilets flushing, people being stabbed, the metallic smash of lunch trays and exaggerated sex sounds.
Sherman then travels to Heart Nightclub in Miami (duh) to meet up with club promoter Jake Inphamous and find out if the track is club worthy, which he does, naturally.
DJs get BJs
Inphamous deems the track a “masterpiece” and arranges him a gig at a nightclub. Upon hearing that girls will, in fact be at the club, the promoter reveals the industry tag line “DJs get BJs.”
At the club, DJ Solitary takes to the decks to play his track, picks up the microphone and shouts, “Let’s hear it for all those murderers who [are] locked up because of crimes they committed! If you believe we should stop shaming murderers, say yeah!”- To which the crowd naturally responds to with a hardy “Yeah!”
Later on, Scottish super-producer Hudson Mohawke took to Twitter, revealing that he made the “troll track” featured on the episode.
