SABC Thank You Concert ends up a flop
The SABC Thank You Concert that took place this weekend was unsurprisingly, a big failure. Top artists were no shows due to payment issues, and the venue was reportedly ninety percent empty.
Leading up to the SABC Thank You Concert the head organiser of the event, Mzwakhe Mbuli had this to say…
“I’m no prophet and anything can happen but I expect at least twenty thousand people.”
The delusion was strong with this one. The expensive event was set up, complete with security while a big chunk of the line up including the supposed twenty thousand people meant to attend did not make it. The effort was all for nothing and the legacy left behind by the controversial SABC Thank You Concert is one of embarrassment for the broadcaster.
It is a wonder how they figured that they would successfully pull off a concert of this scale with lackluster organisational skills. AKA and Kwesta reportedly pulled out of performing due to not being paid but Jack Parow showed up at the venue despite having the same issue. Mandoza, however who is sick with brain cancer took the stage with some help from assistants.
Jack Parow weighed in too…
Jack Parow posted to Instagram and shared his disappointment with the way he was treated when he arrived…
“I just want to apologize to my fans and the people i met in the crowd trying to get inside that we couldn’t get on stage to play and after more than an hour of trying we left. No one knew what was going on and made us feel so uncomfortable & unwelcome & basically like we shouldn’t be there. We came all the way & trusted your word after everyone else pulled out & u begged us to still come. We are thankfull for all you do for local music #sabc , but come on. Kak swak my bru.”
According to Times Live, TMG Entertainment revealed that promoter Morris Roda – earlier investigated by the authorities after a failed Miriam Makeba tribute concert which cost taxpayers millions – has emerged as one of the key organisers behind the concert.
The SABC Thank You Concert was also criticised by the DA in the lead up to the event. The DA disapproved of the SABC’s decision to spend “millions” on the concert.
