Line up changes for SABC radio stations causes friction
Changes for the SABC radio stations seem to just be rolling in. The line-ups for the shows across all eighteen of the radio stations are going to be altered.
According to the City Press, some of the senior radio DJs at Metro FM are not having it. They have threatened to resign if the changes take place. Reportedly, the senior DJs are going to be paired up with the lesser skilled DJs in order to help them improve and grow. The unhappy DJs are said to be Glen Lewis and Bonang Matheba.
Sources told the City Press that the station’s management had allegedly gone into a panic when they noticed listenership falling. This is apparently the reason behind the early reshuffle. Regularly, line-up changes are scheduled in March.
Reportedly the show titled “Whose Show Is This Anyway?” in the time slot 08:00 to 10:00 is one of those in trouble.
This time slot is hosted by three inexperienced DJs. They are Khanyi Mbau, Somizi Mhlongo and Ntombi Mzolo. Each of these hosts will now be moved to other shows on the station.
Everyone has been promised that their jobs aren’t on the line, even though there has been a significant drop in the numbers.
Radio listenership down
The latest listenership figures, released by the Broadcast Research Council of SA, show that between January and June, Metro FM had four million listeners. According to the figures, they have lost two million listeners in the last six months. Ukhozi FM appears to be doing better than everyone else with seven million listeners.
Metro FM is now doing what they can to get their listenership back up. Meanwhile the SABC bosses are not fazed with threats of resignation…
“We have not heard of anyone who said they wanted to resign. It is up to them to resign at the end of the day. Life will go on without them. If there are some who want to quit, they must also bear in mind that even they were once juniors,” said SABC radio stations spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago
